Vassouras Academy of Arts of Brooms (ALV) was founded in 1999 by a group of 30 intellectuals, lovers of world literature. Bringing together the leading names in Vassouras culture, ALV is installed on Mara Palace Hotel, a space provided by its deceased owner, the entrepreneur Gerson Ribas Tambasco.

The ALV is chaired by writer Lielza Lemos Machado, who collects the title of Citizen of Vassouras, the Medal of Merit and Severino Sombra City Commendation, granted by the Municipality of Vassouras. Among her major publications are the books Imagens de Vassouras (1991), A mansão do repatriado, (1995), Apenas um olhar, (2001) e Vassouras, recanto histórico do Brasil (2003).

Throughout its existence, the entity was consolidated as a landmark of local artistic activity, promoting literary events, such as the Jorge Pinto Chronicles Contest and Casimiro Cunha Poetry Contest, which became a national event in 2005.
