Open since 2013, the Museu de Arte do Rio - MAR (Rio Art Museum) offers national and international art exhibitions as well as the institution's permanent collection of works acquired through auctions, donations, and other means. A document, photographs and postcards collections themed on the city is also part of the museum's properties.

The museum is part of the initiatives to bring new life to the city's port area and occupies two buildings - the Dom João VI Palace, an eclectic architectural style listed building and the modern building by its side which was formerly a bus station. The buildings are connected by a glass walkway with wavy ceiling. The former palace hosts the exhibition halls and the former bus station hosts the Escola do Olhar, which aims to educate public school teachers on art.

Partnerships with universities, museums and NGOs, helped the Escola do Olhar develop, art, visual communication and curatorial practices courses. The project includes research work, seminars, workshops and courses.

MAR is managed by the City Administration of Rio de Janeiro and by the Instituto Odeon (Odeon Institute).
