"We are members of Meninos do Batuque Percussion Group, we play the drums with our hearts and we play it vigorously". This is how Meninos do Batuque Percussion Group presents itself to the public. It comprises school-age children and adolescents who play various African rhythms like jongo, ijexá, baião, côco, samba, maculelê and funk. The sound is taken from wasted materials such as oil cans, tomato sauce cans, and plastic containers.

The project was born in 2007 as a pedagogical activity suggested by the physical education teacher, Clarete Braz. "I wanted to put recycling and drumming together," explains the educator who has never studied music and also works at Toninho Marques City Center for Public Education. "I have no training, but I have experience from the streets, just like these boys." Recently, Clarete invited the young musician Edimar Zambroni to be the music group coordinator.
