"Oh, Lady of the Rosary, your home smells. Oh, Lady of the Rosary, your home smells. Smells like rose, smells like cloves, smells of orange blossom." It is with this intoxicating atmosphere that the vibrant sound of drums of the Maracatu Batuque da Mata Group begins its rehearsals. The movement of regional culture formed by musicians and cultural organizers has been getting together since 2011 at Nova Iguaçu." We are a percussion group linked to Nação Estrela do Recife Group" informs Master Maurílio Sal, who runs the whistle.

Aligning art to environmental issues in Rio's Lowlands, the group proposes to cover in their actions the African-Brazilian culture, the intangible heritage, the memory, the identity and the social bonding. The Maracatu Batuque da Mata Group promotes workshops, presentations, motorcades and it weekly open its rehearsals at the samba court or on the streets. "We value the strength of character of Maracatu (performance genre found in Pernambuco state in northeastern Brazil) and we try to promote the spiritual beauty of this African descent pace," says Master Maurílio.
