Born in 1953, Júlio Cesar de Jesus Freire, known as Júlio Paraty, is the main representative of naïve art in the city. His work documents the daily life of "caiçaras" (inhabitants of coastal area) in a naive party with flags that highlight Saint Peter's festivities,  ribbons in women's hair, details of kites drawings. It was in his childhood that the artist began his contact with art, using his mother's makeup to paint shoe boxes.

By his accounts, Paraty has produced more than three thousand gouache paintings on paper and acrylic painting on canvas. He also has exhibited in galleries in Paris and in Madrid. Some of his paintings can be checked on the walls of Pousada do Sandi and Z Café, located in the Historical Center. The value of a picture signed by Julio Paraty ranges from R$350 to R$ 12,000.
