Considered the birthplace of the trova (a genre of poetry derived from medieval troubadours, composed to be accompanied by music) in the country, Nova Friburgo is home, since 1960, to the popular Jogos Florais (Floral Games), a poem contest which takes place at "Alameda das Trovas" (the Trova Alley), at Getúlio Vargas Square.

Also known as the Suspiros square, it has a wall with verses from renowned authors. "Local troubadours are excellent at what they do and receive awards throughout the country" says Dilva Maria de Moraes, vice-president of the União Brasileira de Trovadores - UBT (Brazilian Union of Trova Poets) in Nova Friburgo.

Hundreds of trovas from throughout the country are received by Dilva and the UBT team for the Jogos Florais. The selection is strict: trovas are swiftly eliminated if they not qualify technically. The poem has to have four verses of seven syllables and seconds must rhyme with fourths as a minimum requirement. The poem has to have a general meaning in the end. "

We reward originality in the rhyme choices" says Dilva, who has a trova book published and, in the 2013 edition of the Jogos Florais, she was awarded the first place in the local contest category with the following trova: "Avesso à mágoa doída, do amor que foi um capricho, limpo as gavetas da vida, e jogo as dores no lixo" (Averse to aching sorrow from a love which was a whim, I clean the drawers of life and throw the pain away from it).

Poetry competitions originated in Ancient Rome as popular festivities in tribute to goddess Flora, patron of flowers. In Nova Friburgo, the games were created by a group of aficionados, and became a city heritage, gathering authors from throughout the country. The event includes a mass with trova-style prayers and a parade of muses who recite poems.

The UBT also organizes monthly meetings and workshops. The Jogos Florais also take place in schools "There are always upcoming troubadours. we are fascinated by the making of the perfect verse, the one which fits the metric and the rhyme" says Elisabeth Cruz, publicist for UBT. Elisabeth has a website ( and a radio show in which she showcases trovas.
