When the Cine Imperator opened in 1954, a long line of Hollywood stars such as James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and national stars, such as Sônia Braga paraded on the screens of the then biggest movie theater in Latin America. On the outside, on Dias da Cruz, the main road in the Méier district, the line was long.

After 32 years of bustling activity and a huge public, the space was unable to resist the opening of shopping malls and it closed its doors. However, the silence was temporary. In 1991, the old screen gave way to the stage and the Cultural Center experienced one of its busiest and most glamorous phases, when it became one of the main venues in the North Zone and of the city.Great singers such as Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Tina Turner and Bob Dylan performed there. The cycle ended in 1996.

After 16 long and bitter years with its doors closed, the Imperator - João Nogueira Cultural Center reopened in 2012, and today it is one of the most fundamental culture and leisure venues in the North Zone. The ambiance was completely remodeled. Now, it has theater and exhibit rooms, three movie theaters, a terrace for free events and workshops, and it continues making history.
