To arrive at Bar do David (David's Bar), at Chapéu Mangueira Hill, in Leme neighborhood, it is best to leave your car at home. "I ask my clients to come walking or by cab not to crowd the street with cars and not to interfere with the local routine", says David, the owner of the bar, a nice, affectionate guy.

Open since 2010, when the Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora - UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) entered the area, the bar was the first in a slum in Rio de Janeiro to participate in a gastronomy contest, the Comida di Buteco. "I worked hard on the menu to make a good first impression". Today the bar has a collection of awards.

Good food for a good price is our forte. Feijão tropeiro (Brazilian cattleman's beans), fried shrimp and catupiry cheese cake and sardine cake are some of the appetizers served.

The best selling dish of the weekend menu is the seafood feijoada (a traditional Brazilian dish made of beans and pork) served in a ceramic casserole. Made with white beans, squid, octopus, shrimp, mussels and fish, the dish serves two and comes with rice and farofa (a toasted manioc flour mixture). "It's a family recipe. It feels like I'm opening my own house to the public", says David, who was a fisherman and a diver and has a special taste for seafood.

And so as no one leaves his bar thirsty, David offers a menu of cachaças, with more than 100 different labels. Caipirinhas made with Minas Gerais cachaça Seleta is a great option of a traditional Brazilian drink. Lemon, pineapple with mint, tangerine, passion fruit, coconut and paçoca (peanut candy) are some of the flavors for different tastes, which includes tourists from all over the world. 

Bar do David has featured on The New York Times, the Le Monde and the Argentinian newspaper Clarín. "I heard from a German tourist he decided to visit Rio instead of Bahia because of an article he read about my bar", says David, proudly, who, despite international success is always mindful of his regular customers. Those who walk by the bar have the impression the place has the soul of its owner, who is always there, waiting tables and talking with customers.
